Below, you’ll find a simplified explanation of the various parts of Medicare.

Original Medicare (administered by the federal government): Medicare benefits and options are referred to as Parts A, B, C, and D. No matter which option you choose, the first step is to enroll in Parts A and B, also called Original Medicare.

Medicare Part A (hospital insurance) helps pay for inpatient care at a hospital or nursing facility following a hospital stay.

Medicare Part B (medical insurance) helps pay for services from doctors and other healthcare providers.

Medicare Part C (Medicare Advantage Plans) replaces Parts A and B, may include Part D, and may include additional benefits like dental and eyewear. It’s administered by private insurance companies, so it has an annual maximum out-of-pocket.

Medicare Part D (prescription drug coverage) covers outpatient prescription medications. It’s offered in MAPD Plans (Medicare Advantage with Plan D) or can be purchased separately in addition to Parts A and B.

Medicare Supplement Insurance (Medigap): Original Medicare (Parts A and B) doesn’t cover everything; there’s a deductible for hospital admissions and medical services. Medicare Supplement Insurance helps “fill the gaps” in Medicare Parts A and B, covering some of the remaining health care costs and offering broader and better protection.

We sell Medicare Supplement Insurance (Medigap) and Medicare Part C (Medicare Advantage Plans) from many different insurance companies. We’ll find the right plan for you based on your health needs, budget, and the specific doctors you need to access.

You’re eligible for Medicare if you’re a legal U.S. resident and 1) You’re age 65 or older, or 2) You have a qualifying permanent disability and have received Social Security Disability for 24 months, or you’ve been diagnosed with end-stage renal disease (ESRD).

You can apply for Medicare Parts A and B up to three months prior to the month during which you’ll turn 65. If you’re still working and receive health insurance through your employer, you may be able to stay on your employer plan and delay Part B enrollment until you retire and lose employer coverage. We recommend you speak to your benefits administrator to find out if you should enroll in Medicare Part A and/or B. If you feel that your employer coverage is expensive, then enrolling in Medicare and a Medicare insurance plan might save you money.
